Panel “Stars, Rebellen, Außenseiter. Umstrittene Vorbilder in osteuropäischer Populärkultur” at the Slavistiktag in Jena
Where: Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena
When: 30 September – 3 October 2026
As part of the 15th Deutscher Slavistiktag, taking place from 30 September to 3 October 2026 at Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena, the panel “Stars, Rebels, Outsiders: Contested Role Models in Eastern European Popular Culture” will explore the production and circulation of role models in Eastern European popular culture.
Popular culture thrives on the production of role models, whether in film, football, fashion, or non-conformist subcultures. Such figures become focal points for unfulfilled desires, political hopes, and social anxieties. As celebrities, they embody dreams of wealth and fame; as rebels, they represent aspirations for change and new beginnings; and as outsiders, they often become symbols of alternative ways of life.
But what is the specific function of such often contradictory and contested role models in the context of Eastern European societies? How do they differ from Western celebrity culture or from the hero-making practices of state socialism? What cultural meanings are attributed to them under authoritarian regimes, in times of war, or amid growing nationalism and populism? And what emancipatory or transformative potential do they hold?
The panel brings together a range of case studies examining the production and circulation of figures of identification in Eastern European popular cultures, from late Soviet print culture and Belarusian literature to Eurovision performances, Ukrainian popular culture, Polish political memory, and Black and Pagan Metal.
